A large number of schools across the U.S. have already incorporated technology in classrooms or are planning to do so. On the 9th of October, technology was the topic of North Penn School Board’s workshop meeting.

The purpose, as stated by the school faculty, was to use the current interest and aptitude of the students who are using digital technology and bring it into the realm of education as well. The previous generations were not bombarded with tablets and smart phones like today’s children and hence learning patterns will be different even compared to the previous decade.

The school board meeting merely highlighted the prospects of incorporating digital devices and the internet services in the classroom without any detailed financial plans being laid out. According to board President Vincent Sherpinsky, decisions relating where the district will put it technology budget will come later.

Meanwhile, technology manager Robin Lutcher gave a presentation on the benefits of using technology in a classroom setting and how it will make efficient use of staff time. However, if this goal has to be achieved, the district will need an improvement of the infrastructure.

Meanwhile, other high schools, and even the Elementary schools like Englewood are using wireless platforms like Aruba. Lutcher said a dozen other elementary schools along with middle schools will have these facilities in the near future.

Since middle school students have to take the Keystone Exams on the internet, there is a need for technological upgrades in their schools. Students can be advised to bring their own devices from home, but then internet connection is still required. Many textbooks also have digital aids, which also require the internet to operate.

Meanwhile in another district (Downers Grove), 58 classrooms have been equipped with Apple products. Some teachers from the El Sierra Elementary School were interviewed by a local newspaper about how the lessons are conducted with the help of the iPad. Using the device, interactive images are beamed onto a screen which is placed in front of the students.

In fact, this is a regular feature of more than 50 classrooms in Downers Grove elementary schools. Each class has an iPad along with an Apple TV. This means that education is now more dynamic, convenient, and student-centered.

Pictures can be taken during the class. Not to mention, the whole lesson can be recorded for absentees. The cost of installing the Apple devices is half of the budget required to place interactive white boards or SMART boards in classes.

Moreover, you can hand the device to a student instead of him/her walking up to the board to solve the question. Another benefit is that teachers can use Google Earth to bring out images and data on different countries and cultures within a few minutes during the lesson to provide support to the text book lessons.

According to Scott Meech (district technology director), the whole program began in February with a trail with Apple products. But as these reports suggest, soon technology would become a necessary part of education.

Most probably in the first half 2013, almost 8000 residents of Baker County in Northern Florida will be able to enjoy 4G wireless broadband services. However, these internet connections will be provided over a frequency usually used for small machines like baby monitors.

This project is being supervised at the Northeast Florida Telephone, with technological assistance being provided by XG Technology, a company based in Sarasota, Florida. This firm specializes in using cognitive radio network technology to provide wireless internet to customers at affordable rates.

This may probably be the first private use of the cognitive radio network. This network has the ability to catch all the available frequencies and switch them at the same moment. At present, the military is the chief user of the cognitive radio system, and it will now be a crucial creative component that will be required to pre-empt a bandwidth shortage which can be caused by the increased use of super-fast smart phones.

Speaking in numbers, there was a fourfold increase in the U.S. mobile data traffic last year. Other companies are trying to forestall the shortage with “Super Wi-Fi”. Super Wi-Fi makes use of the vacant parts of the television band which are also known as “white spaces” to provide wireless services.

The downside is that these frequencies can only be availed via advance notice and you cannot get them instantly on real-time basis. Coming back to cognitive technology, the project in Florida (worth almost $2.4 million), will not face such problems. When the services will be provided, signals will be sent and received over the 902 to 928 MHz spectrum.

This spectrum usually caters to cordless phone services, along with operating gadgets like garage-door openers, baby monitors, and several other devices that require short-range signals. Compare this with the fact that cell-phone service in the U.S. is provided in the range of 800-1900 MHz spectrums.

Once the signals are transmitted over the given band, the range is divided into 18 channels. This will be accomplished via an approach called the “dynamic spectrum access”. Real-time sensing will be used to catch signals when they are trigged when someone opens their garage door etc. The signals will then switch channels within an impressive 20 milliseconds.

The service is expected to deliver data at 6 MB/second which is almost four times faster than DSL. Then comes the process of how consumers can use the service. The local service provider will install about 130 transmitters that are the size of bread-boxes on poles and rooftops. Each subscriber will be given a small device to use the convertor box at home or on the go. It is expected that in the future, people will be able to use the convertor through their smart phones.

Although installing the transmitters is an arduous task, it will result in internet services at good broadband speeds and low prices. However, monthly prices have not been determined as of yet. The best part is that if the plan works, Baker County residents will have these facilities for the first time.

This article briefly discusses how the widespread use of mobile technology in the medical world has raised new security and technological issues.

Experts suggest that with time, mobile technology used to manage chronic and acute medical treatment will become widespread among health centers. However, these developments are not without their risks. Security is always an issue, but there also the problem of integrating the technology monitoring systems. Most importantly, there is not enough technical crew to handle the growing equipment.

A report by the name of “Advances in mHealth Technologies” was referred to when information reading the issues with mobile technology was being gathered. The report includes a panel of experts from healthcare organizations and research centers, along with software and mobile firms. These firms have previously worked with mobile health technology in various countries of the world.

An analyst stated that mobile technology created a personal disease management system which can help medical experts and clinicians to look for symptoms of chronic diseases from remote locations. Physicians can also manage serious conditions within the confines of a medical center as well.

Currently, heart disease and diabetes are two leading chronic diseases whose patients are making extensive use of mobile health technology, which doctors utilize to monitor the patient’s general condition as well as any serious changes.

Moreover, there are many areas in the medical field where mobile technology can actually revolutionize the operations. For example, devices can help in long-term disease management, which means as a patient gets older, the technology that provide medical care will also increase creating a new geriatric market segment.

What about the initial diagnosis? The report suggests that mobile technology can help in primary diagnosis, as telehealth networks such as video calls can be used to communicate clinical information, and the doctor can make estimated diagnosis and even suggest improvement remedies.

Mobile technology will also speed up the emergency response systems. Medical teams can communicate quickly via test messaging and personal digital assistance and thus have better coordination when patients are shifted from one place to another.

Moving on, since mobile technology records and displays statistical data, it can help immensely in public health research. Medical records of patients will be stored on their devices which just need to be observed for data collection.

Devices will also have RFID-based drug tracking system. This is an impressive option since it tracks records of medications and medical supplies. Finally, technology is now largely adopted by fitness equipment manufacturers like WiScale and Adidias.

This means that fitness machines like treadmills will even have health monitoring devices attached. Along with tracking the amount of calories being burned, the user can even keep track of his/her body mass index (BMI).

As far as security is concerned, the report suggests that mobile companies will come up with solutions that effectively tackle breaching dangers. However, it is also predicted that with the rise of wireless technology, pretty soon every hospital will have its own wireless health monitoring network which will have less security concerns.

With growing environmental awareness, many organizations around the world are not taking measures to go green. Fuji Xerox, a leading manufacturer of multi-purpose devices is actively developing products and services that will help to preserve nature.

The technology being used at Fuji Xerox is known as RealGreen. This technology was recently put into action along with the company’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction plans of 2020, which seek to reduce the volume of carbon dioxide emissions from Fuji’s products by 7 million tons. When RealGreen is finally implemented, consumers will be able to increase energy savings easily.

Currently, the following products by Fuji Xerox include the RealGreen Technology:

ApeosPort-IV C5575

ApeosPort-IV C4475

ApeosPort-IV C3375

ApeosPort-IV C3373

ApeosPort-IV C2275

To enhance these products’ environmental performance, the following cutting-edge technologies have been used by Fuji Xerox.

High Speed Reactivation from Sleep Mode

This technology helps user to avoid wasting time in waiting for the device to get into running mode after it has been placed on standby. Reactivation will now only take two seconds, as this technology includes Induction Heating technology, which makes the overall usability of a device interesting and convenient.

Smart Energy Management Technology

This technology allows energy saving by only using the necessary features of a device. Under Smart Energy Management, the device is controlled in 4 areas. These are the scanner, control panel, output device, and the controllers. Each part is run in an optimum manner. As a result, there is a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

For a practical demonstration of this feature, customers can use the fax option. Fax and even scanning can be powered up without turning on the output device. This brings energy savings of 54%.

Smart WelcomEyes

This technology is simply amazing. When the device is on sleep mode, it reactivates automatically after sensing an approaching user. In this way, the user would have to wait for the device to warm up. Likewise, if no one uses the machine for more than a minute, its goes into sleep mode automatically. Apart from being environmentally friendly, these features provide great convenience to the users as well.

Other Features of Fuji Xerox Products

Fuji Xerox’s multi-function devices are made from biomass plastic which is used in specific parts of the device. This is yet another method of lowering carbon emissions as biomass plastic is made from nature-derived components.

Fuji Xerox also has the credit of being the first organization in the industry to use inedible biomass plastic in its products. Finally, the ApeosPort device also has the ability to numerically display the impact that the print operations have on the atmosphere. The device checks the ecological rating and displays it on the document monitor.

5 leaves will be displayed which indicate the different energy levels used in various print settings. So the consumer can actually determine beforehand the energy level to be used up in the printing activity. Going green has not negatively affected their products performance, Fuji Xerox products still remain the leading choice for firms looking for efficient office devices.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released the final rule on 11th September, 2012 regarding the allocation of wireless systems for medical body area networks (MBANs). These developments can actually make the idea of the common use of wireless patient monitoring devices a reality that will be both untethered and uninterrupted.

The final rules are expected to be implemented by October 11th, 2012. The regulations lay out the plans of FCC regarding the allocation in the 2360-2400 MHz band in detail. This frequency was previously used only in the aerospace industry for conducting flight tests.

But now, the band will be shared which will enable physicians to observe patients in real-time without them being connected to telemetry machines with MBAN technology. The MBANs are basically lower-powered wireless sensors, which when connected to the body, help to monitor and track significant signs and then send them to a central data collection hub.

But since mobile phones are used extensively, the present wireless networks do not have the capacity to adequately cater to medical monitoring requirements. An increase in the number of monitoring devices will not be supported by the existing wireless networks.

That is why FCC has laid out in its regulations that the new band allocation will help to promote the extensive use of the highly effective MBAN technologies, and this is bound to bring betterment to the medical industry. Medical expenses will be reduced significantly and health care standards will also be improved.

As a result, a maximum number of people can get proper medical attention and have their lives saved. According to the FCC, the health care industry can make savings of more than $1 billion per year if MBAN technology is used extensively.

This is because there will be no need of interconnected hospital beds if wireless technology is implemented. This will allow greater mobility for the patients who can be monitored from anywhere in the hospital, and even from their homes.

More importantly, the risks of infections due to cords and wires will be eliminated completely which will accelerate the healing of the patients.

Two prominent companies that deal in healthcare equipment are Philips Healthcare Systems and GE Healthcare. They are anxiously waiting for the day when wireless bands will be expanded as they played a significant role in getting the regulations for band allocation approved.

Back in 2011, both companies joined hands with officials from the aerospace industry to devise a plan in which FCC would allow the sharing of the wireless spectrum. This plan was presented as a draft, which served as the foundation for the set of rules that FCC finalized two months back.

Besides pushing for these laws, both companies have also urged FCC to assign a MBAN coordinator. When the services will be opened, someone will have to register all the companies and coordinate their usage so that it does not interfere with other devices.

FCC has given the deadline of June 2013’ for the appointment of the coordinator, much to pleasure of health care companies.

Recently, Connected Living launched a new social network exclusively for the elderly. Connected Living is basically an organization that uses the latest technology to help senior citizens to stay connected. Their new social network is already gaining inroad in many communities for senior citizens across the country.

The system is a cloud-based platform with an interface specially designed for older users. They have secure access, and can safely send/receive emails and connect with others on social media using videos and pictures.

Seniors can also play games or browse through the online library. If anyone wants this system, Connected Living provides services to install them along with teaching staff/family members to operate them on their own.

Retirement Home Finder App

If you are searching for a retirement home, the Canadian company, Laughing Bean Media, has developed an app for this purpose! There is a database on the application that helps the user to find retirements homes in America and Canada.

Senior citizens can also find assisted living communities and memory care centers. Currently, the database has 30,000 entries with up-to-date contact information for the all the resources. The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple iTunes.

Smart Beds

BAM Labs have come up with a big software upgrade for their smart beds. These beds are now equipped with features to observe and collect information on position shifts.

BAM Lab’s Touch-free Life Care (TLC) smart bed is already popular among senior citizens, and recently there was an upgrade to its software which is specially implemented for post-acute and acute health care customers.

The software uses a cloud monitoring platform that can biometrically corroborate position changes, being the first technology of its kind in the US. The upgraded smart bed systems also have:

Directional position changes which help in reducing pressure ulcer

Quick alerts for movements

Bed exits to avoid the senior citizens from falling over

An efficient user interface with automated turn reporting

The Benefits of Technology for Senior Citizens

One may ask, is it worthwhile to invest in technology for older people since a majority of them are looked after by others? However, studies reveal that elders who constantly use technology lead better lifestyles in terms of both health and attitude.

Seniors, who use social media, email, and video conferencing facilities maintain constant communication with their communities. In fact, many would be surprised to know senior citizens are not always reluctant to use devices like iPads and laptops, but instead actually learn to use them quiet quickly.

You didn’t need to review studies and research reports to discover the need for investing in technology in senior citizen communities. Most of the developed world has now incorporated computer technology in their lives and careers, and if the elders are left out, they will feel isolated from the world which will only result in their physical and mental deterioration.

If there is one place where advanced technology has been beneficial, it’s the American secondary schools. In fact, high school teachers, as well representatives of technology companies, are striving to increase the role of computer technology in the class room.

There is a dual purpose to doing this. Firstly, is that the students would work efficiently and will have more educational resources to their disposal. Secondly, more and more students would seriously pursue a degree in computer technology to find employment in this rapidly growing sector of the economy.

A prime example in this movement is the Westside High School in Georgia. The faculty at this school is heavily integrating digital books and interactive learning tools. This education format is known as blended learning.

The Westside School actually received a grant for blended learning 2 years back, and they have now augmented their classroom lectures with online assignments and other interactive activities. Students at Westside have personal laptops which they can access with individual accounts. These accounts help them to monitor their progress, as well as search for additional resources for their assignments.

Moreover, the laptops also allow teachers to provide individual feedback to the students, which is a great way of improving their academics. Teachers can also monitor the interests and aptitudes of students in a better way.

Sydney Elkins, a teacher at Westside, says that blended learning allows her to help weak students whereas excellent pupils can further accelerate their progress. She also states that when pupils have their own resources to study from, they would have more control over their academic progress.

Blended learning does not only help on the campus itself. This educational technology has helped teachers to share educational resources with students and fellow teachers as well. For example, there is a website by the name of TeacherPayTeachers. This is a platform for educators to share, and even sell, learning material like lesson plans, activity sheets, and graphical data etc.

Through these forums, teachers can further expand their capabilities and use them to spread good learning material to a wider audience. Not to mention, they can earn a lot of money while doing so.

Coming to the second benefit of blended learning, teachers are seeing training in digital technology as an important part of their student’s career planning. With the rise of high-speed internet, smart phones, and tablets, the technology sector provides new opportunities every moment.

However, there is a shortage of qualified people to fill-in for positions in this sector. Statistics from 30th September, 2012 show that almost 150,000 job openings related to computer technology will come up annually until 2020 (The New York Times).

The need for students who take up computer technology in their higher studies is required to fill in these jobs. In fact, Microsoft has come with various initiatives across the US where their engineers have visited schools and provided computer training to students. Many schools have opened up across the country where high school students can learn computer programming and be encouraged to major in computer science.

German-based Deutsche Telekom AG, the owner of T-Mobile Company, claims to be negotiating a deal to buy MetroPCS Inc. in an effort to merge the small company with T-Mobile US. MetroPCS itself has confirmed the news regarding the negotiations.

On 2nd October 2012, T-Mobile’s parent company stated that no decision has been made thus far and none of the details have yet been finalized. If the deal is put into effect, it would bring together two small companies in the U.S. wireless industry and help them to achieve a notable position in the market which they did not have individually.

T-Mobile currently is the 4th largest cellphone company in the US followed by MetroPCS at the 5th position with 33.2 million and 9.3 million subscribers successfully. However, the combined sales would still leave T-Mobile behind Sprint Nextel.

But a lot of ground can be achieved with this deal. To begin with, T-Mobile will have access to greater space on the airways, which can prove to be significant in the company’s pursuit to expand its capacity for wireless broadband, something other cellphone carriers are also attempting to do.

In fact, just a year ago AT&T bid for T-Mobile at $39 billion for the same reason. However, officials thought that this deal would result in a monopoly in the wireless industry and competition would be severed, owing to the face that the 2nd largest company acquiring the 4th largest! Hence, the deal was cut short.

But the same fears will not prevail over T-Mobile’s acquirement of MetroPCS, as they are both relatively small companies. In addition, T-Mobile has seen a decline in its customer base over the past 2 years, which brings down its size even further.

Bloomberg News was the first to inform that the German parent company’s board will be called in to vote on this deal on Wednesday. After this news break, MetroPCS’s shares rose to 17%, the highest level in more than a year. Back in Europe, Deutsche Telekom’s shares rose 2% following the news.

There are however some complications that would most probably arise during the deal. It should be remembered that both companies work on different networks, which means MetroPCS phones would not work on T-Mobile’s US network. This also works the other way around.

But since both companies are installing the 4G technology in their phones, they can work together to synchronize their networks in the near future.

In closing, it has to be reiterated that the acquisition would still not make T-Mobile the No.1 cellphone company in the country. Experts have suggested that even if T-Mobile combines with MetroPCS, they would still have to strive hard to compete with leading wireless companies like AT&T and Verizon.

However, the deal would give real competition to Sprint Nextel. There were rumors circulating that it was Sprint that was actually buying MetroPCS. But now its shares have fell by 4.8% to $4.93 after the rumors were proven false. If the deal will be finalized, Sprint will face fierce competition, especially in the market for cheap prepaid service.

In the current mobile industry, iOS leads the market, followed by the Android. However, Microsoft (being the No. 1 name in computer technology), has failed to work wonders with its Windows Mobile, especially in comparison with the aforementioned brands.

However, the present situation hasn’t faded out Microsoft’s hopes of making a name in the mobile industry. Onlookers may question the seriousness of this claim, but with the help of a new piece of software, Microsoft might be able to achieve its goals.

The new software is called the App Player which is currently owned by BlueStacks. App Player basically helps Windows users to run Android apps on their device. The software translates the apps into code which makes them work on Windows PCs and other devices.

Although the App Player for Windows 7 & 8 was just launched, the Mac version of the software has been available in the market since June.

The App Player will not only make Android apps compatible with the Window’s settings, but it will scale them as well. This means the App Player can adjust the size of any app for your device even if it is a large screened PC. At least this is what they claim.

The real success of any software lies in its effectiveness on tablets and smart phones. This is particularly where the Windows Mobile failed to make any significant developments to match its rivals. Compared with more than half a million apps on Apple and Android individually, how can the Windows Mobile even think of grabbing new customers?

Indeed, the flooding sales of iOS devices are the result of their developer programs which have allowed thousands of people across the world to write impressive apps for Apple. Why would developers create apps for Windows when hardly anyone uses the system?

As we speak, efforts are being made to help people use Android apps without the hassle of downloading the App Player. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has already signed a deal with BlueStacks regarding the inclusion of the App Player directly in the processors.

In simple words, if your device is powered by AMD, you will not have to download the App Player, as Android programs will run automatically.

However, this deal will not only benefit Microsoft, but also the Nokia phone company. The latter has also seen a recent fall in sales. In fact, it has even lost its place as the No.1 mobile company, a title which it held for the last 14 straight years.

The reason? Monotony. How long can you remain a significant player in this innovative industry by dragging the Symbian operating system?

Nokia tried to reverse the position by introducing the Lumias for the Windows 7 mobile, but this move also backfired as Microsoft announced that mobiles using Windows 7 will not be compatible with version 8.

Keeping these desperate attempts aside, both companies should strive hard to regain their former positions in the industry. Although the App Zone by AMD alone will not cause the companies to come back on top, it will serve as a useful asset in their struggle.

Video conferencing has become quite common nowadays. Many internet users enjoy formal and informal communication via video with people who are miles away. However, can such a setting work for music sessions where musicians in different locations have to synchronize their playing to practice/perform a coherent piece?

As unlikely as it sounds, this breathtaking feat was achieved yesterday in Philadelphia, where two musicians, situated miles apart, performed a duet in real time to the amazement of the crowds. The audience did not just comprise of simple music lovers, but also hundreds of “sophisticates” like engineers, scientists, and researchers. By the end of the performance, they were forced to leap from their chairs.

The event was arranged at the Internet2 fall member meeting at a downtown hotel in Philadelphia. On stage was the famed violinist Marjorie Bagley who was accompanied by another skilled musician, Mr. Cheng-Hou Lee, who performed via video from DeKalb III.

They stunned the onlookers by performing the Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia. This exercise was conducted to test the success of low-latency audio and video conferencing software named LOLA.

LOLA has been developed by Italian researchers at the G. Tartini Music Conservatory and the Italian Research & Education Network.

The violin maestro commented after the performance that Lee did not seem to be at a distance and it was as if he was right there on stage performing with her. She was quite right, because LOLA brings down the transmissions holdups to almost 35 milliseconds.

Of course, the musicians would hardly know the technicalities involved in the software and they could simply exclaim that the system allowed them to be on the same stage virtually.

Usual delays in typical video conferences are up to 200 milliseconds, which is alright when you are conversing online. However, for a jam session, such a delay will only disturb the flow of the music. Hence, LOLA is the ideal choice for musicians who want to collaborate with others over the internet.

This was what Roberto Diaz (president of the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia) claimed to be the aim of this technology, i.e. to allow music students access budding musicians and teachers from around the world easily. This breakthrough in video technology would without doubt revolutionize the music industry.

Before summing up this post, the reader should be warned that the LOLA technology only operates on Internet2. This is basically a high speed internet network used in academic circles and research institutions across the U.S.

Once again, typical video software is suitable for online conversations, but it will not be effective when it comes to music sessions.

The usual internet services which people use to chat, browse, and Tweet are too slow owing to the fact that billions of people use them. That is why LOLA presents a high speed solution which helps people to connect as if they were in the same room.

Overall, LOLA has received a great reception by music students and audio/video engineers across the U.S., but we are yet to see its implications on the music world at large.
